The Rhode Island Educational Media Association (RIEMA) is a professional organization representing school library media professionals and support staff working for school library media, computer, and instructional technology programs in Rhode Island. RIEMA is an affiliate of both the American Library Association's division of American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT). The mission of the Rhode Island Educational Media Association is to provide leadership and support for school library media professionals and support staff in the development, promotion, improvement, and evaluation of school library media, computer, and instructional technology programs in ALL Rhode Island schools. This mission is accomplished by the following GOALS: 1. RIEMA will promote efforts to provide full and equitable access to information resources in all formats. 2. RIEMA will promote efforts to support professional development and identify roles and responsibilities for effective library media, computer, and instructional technology personnel. 3. RIEMA will promote efforts to ensure effective library media, computer, and instructional technology programs that support, Information Power. the national . guidelines of the AASL and AECT, and the common core of learning outcomes in Rhode Island. 4. RIEMA will promote efforts to ensure intellectual freedom for all students and staff by adhering to the tenets expressed in the following documents: the American Library Association's "Library Bill of Rights" and its interpretation for schools, "Access to Resources and Services in the School Library Media Program", "AASL Statement on Confidentiality of Library Records", and "The Freedom to Read" statement as well as the Association for Educational Communications and Technology's "Statement on Intellectual Freedom". 5. RIEMA will promote legislation and funding at all levels to support and further the development of library media, computer, and instructional technology programs in every school. 6. RIEMA will promote and encourage an awareness of the roles of the library media, computer and instructional technology professionals. We impact school library media programs in the educational process. 7. RIEMA will promote and encourage the strengthening of school library media leadership at all levels to ensure that schools, districts. and the Rhode Island Department of Education have qualified persons serving in positions of leadership. 8. RIEMA will promote communication; networks, and partnerships through collaborative efforts of library media, computer, and instructional technology professionals with the larger school community and with business, industry, social services, libraries and information agencies.
