Toward valuing and protecting our colleagues and students

Welcome to the blog for the Professional Ethics Committee.  To start our blog, I thought we could begin with a history of the foundational principles as they related to individual, professional and societal growth and development.  

AECT has maintained a Code of Ethics since the beginning of the organization.  Our current  Code of Ethics has evolved from a foundational set of principles borrowed from the National Education Association (NEA). Those foundational principles were specifically developed for people working in public education (K-12 teachers).  Understandably, those principles were very heavily slanted toward protection of children in school settings. The current Code of Ethics has grown from those principles and is now divided into three categories of concern: the individual, society, and our profession. 

Our principles of ethical behavior have grown out of a need to understand, value, and protect the rights of people in their various learning environments (e.g., school, work, and research).  The principles have been proposed by members of the Professional Ethics Committee and over a course of time, debate and compromise, the principles have emerged as guidelines for conduct within our membership.

To better help understand the breadth of the various principles, case studies have been created to show how the principles can be applied in the various settings we find ourselves in.  To see a variety of case studies as they related to the Code of Ethics, check on these links:

  •  A publication of case studies as they relate to the Code of Ethics prior to 2001. The publication was edited by Dr. Paul Welliver (previous Chair of the Professional Ethics Committee). An ongoing mission of the Professional Ethics Committee members is to continue to revisit the existing principles of our Code as well as identify areas of concern as we move into the future of educational environments full of change and challenge.

If you have suggestions for new principles or updates to the current set of principles in the Code of Ethics, please add your voice to this blog.  You may also contact any member of the Committee to relay your ideas and discuss the underlying concerns you may have.
